Separating the Dross From the Gold, Organize That Closet!

In today's busy word everyone needs some form of closet organization.  This can be as simple as a few shelves and some vinyl containers to very elaborate systems designed by professional closet organizers.  Whichever path you take, fast and easy or top-of-the-line deluxe, you will find it takes much less time every morning to get ready to meet the world.

Probably the easiest items to organize are your shoes.  No one wants to march out of the house in mis-matched foot gear!  Start by pairing up all your shoes, and while you are at it, check for needed repairs.  It is also a good idea to separate out every pair you have not worn in at least the past year.  Into this category would go those darling sandals that pinch across your arch so badly that you can't stand to wear them for more than five minutes or that snazzy pair of purple sequined 5" spike heels you bought in a sale frenzy and still have the price tag on the sole.  If it doesn't fit or flatter it is time to pass it on to someone else.

After you have pared down your shoe collection, decided if you want to store them in boxes or hanging shoe bags.  Shoe bags are great to either hang over the door or from the closet bar.  Too many shoes for shoe bags?  Go for the clear plastic shoe boxes so you can easily see what is inside.  For the truly organized, add a card with pertinent information like the last time worn, where you bought them, outfits they go well with, etc.

Now that the shoes are neat and tidy it is time to tackle the rest of the wardrobe.  Remove every single garment from your closet and ruthlessly sort by age, wear-ability, and if it has even been worn in this century.  Put your workhorse outfits to one side then concentrate on what is left.  The same rule applies, if it has not been worn in the past year and is not a ball gown, out!  It if doesn't fit, out!  If you only bought it to please your mother, ex-boyfriend, or the salesperson and personally hate it, out!

By the time you have subjected all your clothes to this rigorous examination, you will find that there is now a lot of room on that closet bar for what is left.  The extra closet organizer shelves and hangers you bought will hold everything with room to spare and you won't have any trouble selecting an outfit in the morning.
